Kylie Minogue Biography
Who can ever forget Kylie's huge hair when she played motor mechanic Charlene Mitchell in the popular Australian soap "Neighbours." The popular tomboy's romance with blonde and beautiful boyfriend Scott had fans all over the world glued to their screens, and when their wedding episode was shown in 1987 20 million British viewers tuned in to watch.
Kylie Minogue was born on 28th May 1968, and at the age of 11 she appeared in "The Sullivans" and "Skyways." In 1985 she was cast in one of the leading roles in "The Henderson Kids." She made a demo disc for producers of a weekly music programme on Australian TV, "Young Talent Time", on which her sister Danii was a regular performer. Although she sang on the show in 1985, she was not invited to join the cast.
The following year her life, and her fortunes, changed forever, when she was cast as Charlene. She was the first person to win 4 Logie Awards at one event, and was the youngest recipient of the Gold Logie, as the country's most popular TV performer, determined by the viewers.
She formed a relationship with Donovan during the soap, and carried on going out with him when she left in 1987 pursue a career as a recording artist.
Her first single "Locomotion," spent 7 weeks at Number 1 in the Australian charts, and became the highest selling single of the decade.
In 1988 her debut album "Kylie," and subsequent single "I should be so Lucky" reached Number 1 in the UK charts, and over the next two years 13 singles reached the British Top 10. She made her film debut in "The Delinquents," in 1989, which was a box office hit in Australia and the UK.
Kylie has matured from her girl next door image to a mature and sophisticated performer. She sang at the Opening and Closing ceremonies at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and there is a bronze statue of her at Waterfront City, Melbourne Docklands.
Just when her career was at its height and she was about to embark on her "Showgirl Tour" of Australia, Kylie received some devastating news. In 2005, she was diagnosed with an aggressive from of breast cancer.
She since revealed on the Ellen De Generes Show in America that she was originally mis-diagnosed. Doctors gave her the all-clear just weeks before she was diagnosed with the disease, but she persisted until she got an accurate diagnosis for a lump found in her breast.
At a check-up on May 17th 2005 she was told she did have the disease and she had to postpone her tour, and cancel a headline performance at the British Glastonbury Festival.
Kylie was worse than originally thought, and her cancer was aggressive and would progress fast if not treated quickly. She underwent surgery and had a mastectomy, followed by hair-losing chemotherapy.
Originally she received treatment in the Cabrini Hospital in Melbourne, but then she moved to Paris to live with her then fiancé Oliver Martinez and receive treatment at the Institue Gustave Roussu. This is the biggest cancer treatment centre in Europe, which promotes a holistic approach to the disease.
In 2006 she resumed her career with "Showgirl, The Homecoming Tour." Shortly after her recovery she broke off her engagement to Martinez after she discovered he had cheated on her, like James Gooding, her previous fiancé.
She is currently dating a 32-year-old model 9 years her junior, Andres Velencoso from Toss de Mar. She still has to take medication for her breast cancer, which sometimes causes her severe headaches and sickness. It also makes her depressed and she cannot wait to finish the treatment in early 2011. Kylie says it is her career that helped her through her treatment and gave herself something to focus on. She has been voted the most inspirational breast cancer sufferer, for her willingness to speak openly and honestly about her fight for recovery.
Kylie now lives in London and was awarded the Order of the British Empire on 28th May 1968.
