Cheryl Cole Biography
The "Nation's Sweetheart" Cheryl Cole's life has been a roller-coaster of ups and downs. She earned that title after joining the panel of judges in The X-Factor two years ago and she has mentored the last two winners, Alexandra Burke in 2008 and Joe McElderry in 2009.
Cole was born into a poverty-stricken area of Newcastle-upon Tyne on 30th June 1983 as Cheryl Ann Tweedy. Her parents never married, and separated when she was 11-years-old. She started sequence dancing when she was a 4-years-old, and decided at an early age she wanted to make music her career. At the age of 9 she joined the Royal Ballet's Summer School.
She made a name for herself when she was chosen to be a member of the all-girl group "Girls Aloud" at the reality programme "Popstars - The Rivals" in 2002.
The group achieved 20 consecutive Top 10 singles which included 4 number 1s in the UK. They also achieved 5 platinum albums, and won 5 BRIT Award nominations 2005-10.
As soon as "Girls Aloud" started to make an impact, everything the girls did hit the headlines. On January 11th 2003 Cole was involved in a fight at a nightclub in Guildford with a toilet attendant Sophie Aomogbokpa. She was arrested and charged with making a racially aggravated assault on the woman, causing her actual bodily harm.
Cole denied the attack, saying she acted in self-defence, and she also insisted she had never called the woman a "black bitch." She was found guilty of the attack and was sentenced to 120 hours Community Service. She also had to pay Aomogbokpa £500, plus £3,000 prosecution costs.
Whilst she was singing with "Girls Aloud" she started to build her solo career, and she is now one of the most successful artists in the world. She released two consecutive number 1 albums in the UK, as well as reaching number 1 twice in the singles charts with "Fight for This Love," and "Promise This."
Cole began dating the "love of her life" Chelsea and England footballer Ashley Cole in 2004, and he proposed to her in Dubai. They married in Barnet, North West London on July 15th 2006, selling the wedding pictures to OK Magazine for £1 million.
When it became public knowledge two years later her husband had cheated on her, Cole stopped wearing her wedding ring, but they later had a reconciliation.
2010 has been the worst year in the singer's life. There were revelations in the press that Ashley had cheated on her five more times and they separated again. Women sold their stories to the paper in droves, one even said she had slept with the footballer in 2004, the year the couple started dating.
In May 2010 she filed for divorce and the Decree Nisi was made absolute in September. In an interview on ITV with Piers Morgan she said she would never take her husband back, even though he had been pleading with her to do so.
But her black year was to get blacker. Her friend, US dancer Derek Hough, arranged a surprise holiday for them both in Tanzania to help her get over her divorce. She started to feel ill shortly after they got back, and noticed her lips had gone blue during a photo-shoot, but she thought she was just getting 'flu.
Then she very publicly collapsed, which was shown on television, during rehearsals for X-Factor. Her collapse was diagnosed as exhaustion and reaction to her recent divorce.
But her condition deteriorated rapidly the following day, when she was at her Surrey home with Hough, she was sweating and shaking. He insisted she went to hospital and made them do tests, and she was diagnosed with malaria, probably caused by a mosquito bite whilst on holiday.
On Morgan's show she admitted she was minutes from death, and it was Hough's quick actions that had saved her life. She missed the rest of the X-Factor auditions and boot-camp, but managed to return to the show for the judges houses. Her venue had to be changed to England, as she still wasn't well enough to travel.
