Anne Hathaway Biography

She was the darling of Hollywood, with films like "The Princess Diaries" and "The Devil Wears Prada" under her belt. She had a rich, handsome Italian boyfriend and they were film-land's most glamorous couple.

Then something happened that made Anne Hathaway feel like "A rug being pulled out from under me." Her boyfriend who had been her constant companion and lover for four-and-a-half years was arrested for fraud and money laundering.

The FBI seized all her journals, gold and silver watches, rings and bracelets Raffaello Follieri had given her from the $37,000 a month apartment they shared together in Manhattan.

They also seized photographs of her taken by a top photographer he had hired. Hathaway was wearing black fishnets, a garter belt and bustier that fully exposed her top. She only discovered they were in the hands of the FBI when she asked her brother Michael to go to Follieri's store in The Bronx and get them back.

Follieri was accused of fraudulently fleecing investors out of millions of dollars in a scheme where he posed as the Vatican's representative on real estate investment. He used the money to buy expensive clothes and meals and to take Hathaway on exotic vacations in private jets.

She also helped him develop his children's charity, The Follieri Foundation, based in Manhattan which focused on programmes such as providing vaccinations for children in Third World countries. Hathaway was a financial donor and also sat on the board.

The charitable organisation was under investigation in 2008 by the IRS for failing to file tax papers required from non-profit-making organisations.

Follieri was arrested in June 2008 and after pleading guilty on October 23rd 2008 he was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison.

After his arrest Hathaway went into a state of shock and said it was only the kindness of her friends that enabled her to keep working. She was re-united with Jake Gyllenhaal, who she had worked with in "Brokeback Mountain" for the film "Love and Other Drugs" and they have both been nominated for an award at the 15th annual Satellite Awards.

Hathaway has said the film was very therapeutic even though she was an absolute mess and cried nearly every day.

For someone whose ambition was to become a nun she loves doing nude scenes and has no fear of getting naked on the screen, saying "I don't think there is anything wrong with nudity in film and I would hope any actor that was asked to reveal that part of themselves would do it as it is a loving and open experience."

Raised as a Catholic with really strong values she changed her mind about going into a convent when she was 15-years-old. She found out her brother Michael was gay and said she felt she could not be part of a religion that condemned her brother's sexual orientation.

In 2009 she said she was a non-denominational Christian because she had not found the religion for her but it was "work in progress."

Although she is happy with her current boyfriend Adam Shulman she doesn't find it easy to fall in love, because the experience with Follieri has made her think she is too trusting.
